Boomershoot WiFi

Boomershoot has free wireless internet connections available. There were some changes in the spring of 2009. A mapping of the signal strength has not been done yet but all the spot checks showed better signal strength than previous. The new equipment is believed to provide more reliable service. Previously the service would mysteriously stop and start.

The SSID is Boomershoot. No password or key is required.

There is also a local web server available. You can only access it from on site. It has a copy of this website as well as a copy of this web based exterior ballistics program. The address for the onsite server will be http://boomershoot. Some cell phones tested have problems with resolving the name locally and have to use the IP address directly which is http://192.168.1.20/.

The exterior ballistics program is optimized for use with cell phones and other person devices. But it can be used almost any other other web browser.

The specifications on the connection to the Internet are:

Up to 512Kbps downstream
128Kbps upstream

Fair Access Policy threshold limits (monthly):
7,500MB Download
2,300MB Upload

What this means is that with a few dozen people using it things are going to be rather slow. Checking email and light blogging is going to be fine but uploading or downloading videos is out. We also need to be a little bit careful that we don’t exceed the monthly limits when combined with our neighbor (host) normal usage.

Also you should be aware that because it is via satellite the ping times to anywhere else on the planet are on the order of 1.5 seconds or greater. This makes real time interactions with some services an "interesting" experience. That is the part of the reason for putting up the local server with mirrors of web sites of potential interest. Here are the actual ping times of local versus Internet.

Local:

Ping statistics for 192.168.1.1:
Packets: Sent = 218, Received = 218, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 2ms, Maximum = 56ms, Average = 3ms

Internet (to Moscow, Idaho):

Ping statistics for 216.98.224.132:
Packets: Sent = 144, Received = 143, Lost = 1 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 1163ms, Maximum = 3536ms, Average = 1428ms
